Budget Consideration Postponed Until Tuesday, March 17th

Calls to the White House Needed Immediately

Good news and bad news today in Washington, DC. The good news -- We have a little more time to get the budget message to Capitol Hill. The Budget Committee mark-up has been postponed until Tuesday. The bad news -- We have a heavy lift! We need to convince Senate Budget Committee members that mandatory spending for child care through the Child Care and Development Block Grant is essential.

We can still impact the outcome... The Budget Committee may respond favorably if strong leadership is shown by the White House. The White House needs to make clear to Senate budget leaders that mandatory spending for child care is a #1 budget priority.

The Budget Committee plans to set aside (reserve) funds for tobacco-related issues in the budget. At this point, Senator Pete Domenici (R-NM) only plans to include Medicare in this reserve. Child care must be listed in the tobacco reserve in order to ensure that funds are available for a major child care investment package this year. The White House must demand that funding for child care be included in the reserve for tobacco investments.

ACTION NEEDED... CALL THE WHITE HOUSE TODAY!

Call Maria Echaveste, Director of White House Public Liaison Office, at 202-456-2930 to relay the message that the White House must continue to show leadership on child care.

The Message to the White House:

"I am calling to urge the President to continue his leadership on child care. It is important that the White House demand that child care be included in the tobacco reserve in the Senate budget. Mandatory money is necessary to ensure that the President's strong child care proposal translates into real help for America's children and families."

Also, if you live in a state with a Senator on the Budget Committee (see list below), please call and urge them to support including child care in the tobacco reserve. All Senators can reached by calling the U.S. Capitol switchboard at 202-224-3121.
