Press Release for 504 Media
In 1977, 150 disabled activists and their supporters sat in at the SF Federal Building for twenty six days to demand legislation protecting people with disabilities. These activists succeeded in obtaining the signing of regulations implementing Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973.
In June 1997, a twentieth anniversary celebration was organized to commemorate the sit-in and the people who made it happen. Out of that celebration came: the award winning documentary video "The Power of 504", illustrating the events leading up to the sit-in including interviews with organizers and participants; a 64 page commemorative book including photographs and articles of the sit-in; and an hour long audio Documentary featuring contemporary media coverage entitled "We Shall Not Be Moved".
The video is available in open caption, audio descriptive and standard formats. Alternative formats of the Commemorative Book (large print, computer disk, audio cassette) and the Audio Documentary (transcript, computer disk) are also available.
All these items are an excellent resource for Disability History and are suitable for elementary school age children. Call Julie Drucker for an order form at (510) 644-2555 or leave a voice mail on extension 306. Fax your request to (510) 841-8645 or E-mail us at firstname.lastname@example.org
